Girls win First Game
Posted by Iain Strachan on 25 February 2011
Ready for our first ever European game with high expectations the first few minutes were not as planned. Within 2 mins we were 1 - 0 down to a sloppy goal. Amy Rowan restored parity with a good goal but we again shot ourselves in the foot to go 2 - 1 down. We steadied the ship a little and 8 minutes later in the 13th minute Becky Ward brought it back to level. Two minutes later Rachel Osborne fired us into the lead from a good passing move and we went into half time with a slender lead.
We opened the scoring early in the second half with Amy making it 4 - 2 but immediately let it slip back to a single goal advantage. On 27 Vikki restored the 2 goal advantage and Amy increased it to 3 a few minutes later. This should have been the game sewn up but it was never really comfortable right to the end. They got 6 - 4 from poor defence but on 35 Vikki restored the 3 goal lead.
That was the catalyst for them to throw on the kicking back and with 90 secs remaining they managed to get it to 7 - 5 and on the final whistle they were awarded a corner. With a point to prove we saw it off for a 7 - 5 WIN.
5 points in the bag with the French up next. They managed a 6 - 1 win over the Russians so this will be the crunch game.
