Match Report

After a rest week due to the under-16 and under-18 inter-district tournament Dundee Wanderers II’s quest for Regional League North glory continued with the visit of Granite City Wanderers II to DISC. The away side looked enthusiastic and up for the challenge and it would be down to Dundee Wanderers to stamp their authority on the game.

Dundee Wanderers made the brighter start and controlled the early pace of the game. Granite City struggled to keep up with the young Wanderers side and their crisp passing cut open the away defence several times in the open exchanges.

It wasn’t long before the Wanderers pressure was turned into a goal. Good midfield interplay by Grant Hunter and Benny Gibson released Luke McGowan who drove into the circle and fired a ball across the face of goal for Murdo Elwis to slam the ball home for his debut goal as a Wanderers player.

Wanderers second goal followed shortly after, this time Grant Hunter and Shaun Chalmers combined to feed Blair Williams who laid the ball off to Keith Borland who slapped the ball home from the top of the circle. Wanderers would not be stopped now and went in search of their third goal before the break. It came through slightly fortuitous circumstances, a penalty corner wasn’t stopped at the top of the circle but Wanderers recovered to send a dangerous ball across the face of goal which found Scott Glashan at the far post who had the presence of mind to lift the ball high into the net over the desperate slide of the Granite City goalkeeper. Wanderers were now in complete control and only a total collapse would allow the Aberdeen side back into the contest.

That collapse was not in sight when the second began in the same fashion as the first ended, with Wanderers comfortably in control. Although Granite City did come back into the fixture they never created anything to worry the Wanderers defence. Wanderers’ fourth goal was a fine solo effort from Greig Jamieson, who used his physicality to force his way into the circle and did well to hold his footing to slide a reverse stick shot beyond the goalkeeper.

Wanderers finished off the game with a final flourish and their fifth goal of the contest. The forwards kept the pressure on the Granite City defenders; Williams eventually winning possession and sending a ball into the circle for Elwis to deflect in for his second goal of the game.

All in all it was a thoroughly deserved victory for Wanderers after dominating the game almost from start to finish. With only one more outdoor game before the indoor starts Wanderers will look to finish the first half of the outdoor season on a high against Aberdeen University II.
