Match Report

Wanderers II season continued with a home match against local rivals Harris II. On paper Wanderers were favourites but Harris were not looking to lie down and their boisterous support let it be known how important a win would be for their team.

The match started off slowly with Harris surprisingly dictating the pace of the game and Wanderers looking to get in behind Harris’ high defensive line. But once the home side found their rhythm it Wanderers who created the best chances in the first half, Scott Glashan spurning a good opportunity at the near post before Bruce Rowan swung and missed at a rebound at a penalty corner. Wanderers would be made to rue those missed chances as Harris took the lead just before half-time with a strike from a second phase at a penalty corner, much to the delight of their support.

Conceding a goal, as if often the case with Wanderers, served as the wake up call to play the hockey they are capable of. Greig Jamieson scoring the equalising goal; firing home a diving effort at the near post following good work down the right by Blair Williams.

Despite improving in the second half Wanderers again fell behind. A direct strike from a penalty corner took a freakish deflection off Richard Crighton’s stick during his defensive charge down and looped high over the despairing leap of Lewis Beer in the Wanderers goal.

Wanderers again responded well to going behind and Glashan atoned for his earlier miss by finishing off a fantastic team move of one-touch passing involving; Grant Hunter and Keith Borland before Glash was set up for the finish. Wanderers pressed for a winner against their tiring opponents but Harris held firm. Until a few moments from full-time when a defensive error was pounced on by Williams who quickly passed to Luke McGowan who’s first time effort was drilled low past the Harris goalkeeper. The late goal was too much to overcome for Harris and Wanderers held on for the three points.
