Match Report

This week Dundee Wanderers II played host to Aberdeen Grammar FPs II at DISC. It was a game that Wanderers would expect to win and went out looking to assert their dominance from the start. Ross Glashan was tormentor-in-chief of the Grammar defence and it was his drive into the circle and  low shot that beat the goalkeeper to give Wanderers the lead.  The home side remained in the ascendency but Grammar defended in numbers to frustrate the Wanderers attack. Grammar equalised against the run of play, Wanderers conceded a cheap foul inside their own 25 which Grammar took quickly and fired the ball into the circle where an attacker was on hand to deflect home. Scott Glashan had a golden chance to give Wanderers back the lead after a shot from his brother forced a stick save from the goalkeeper, who was again equal to Scott’s rebound. The away side went into the half-time break the happier side with the 1-1 score line.

Wanderers knew they had to raise their game in the second half to get the result their dominance deserved. James Weyers, on his return to hockey after an extended break, pushed the team on from midfield and Wanderers would take the lead through an Aaron White goal after a penalty corner broke down and in the ensuing scramble White reacted quickly to slam the ball into the goal. This would prove to be the catalyst of Grammar’s undoing and White added his second goal after a neat switch at a penalty corner found him on the left and White dispatched his flick into the corner of the net. Grammar made a decent fist of getting themselves back in the game with a few penalty corner attempts that were well defended. With Grammar chasing the game there was space around the back of their defence for Wanderers to exploit and Greig Jamieson was unfortunate to see his diving effort rebound off the outside of the post before a Scott Glashan shot and another White penalty corner were well saved by the visiting goalkeeper.

The frame of the goal would again deny the hosts; firstly White rattled the crossbar with a penalty corner flick and Bruce Rowan’s follow up met the same fate. Ross Glashan would eventually seal the game after several saves and deflections in the Grammar circle saw the ball fall into his path and the in-form striker made no mistake in front of goal.

The score perhaps should have been higher but it was a result that kept Wanderers in touch with the leaders of Regional League North. Next week Wanderers are back on the road to face a rejuvenated Bon Accord MBC in Portlethem.
