Match Report

Dundee Wanderers II travelled to Countesswells, Aberdeen for their second game of the season. The opposition this week were reigning Regional League North champions AAM Gordonians II. Wanderers were hoping that this visit to Aberdeen and would prove to be as profitable as the last. Gordonians however, had other ideas.

The game started with the more experienced home side dictating play but Wanderers more than ably matched their hosts in the opening 15 minutes before Gordonians took control, first hitting the post and then forcing a save from Lewis Beer at a penalty corner. The hosts made the break-through shortly after when an attack was allowed to get free before beating two Wanderers players, finding his teammate in the circle who turned his marker and placed a shot beyond Beer.

The goal deflated Wanderers and the home side again hit on the counter and the Gordonians forward found himself allowed to enter the circle under no pressure where he was allowed the good fortune to swing and miss the ball before finding the bottom corner with his second effort. Wanderers felt the first action was dangerous but the umpire ruled that as no-one was close to the forward that the goal was allowed to stand.

Gordonians would further stretch their lead with a massive slice of good fortune, a strike at goal was unintentionally deflected in the opposite direction and despite Beer making a save the rebound was easy pickings for the attacking player. It wasn’t a vintage first half performance from Wanderers with a sole Benny Gibson penalty corner effort their only attempt on goal.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first with home side making most of the play and Wanderers attempting to keep up. The second half introduction of Bruce Rowan added some much needed grit to the Wanderers defence. Despite this the hosts would add another goal from a penalty corner, the striker faking a shot to remove the defender and flicking the ball high into the net. The final goal would be of Wanderers own doing, the ball was given away from a free-hit and again Gordonians broke with two forwards one feeding the other for a simple finish in front of goal.

As impressive as the home side were, it was a poor performance from Wanderers who will look to put this behind them and get back to winning ways when Gordonians third string travel down to Dundee for Wanderers’ first home game this season.
