Match Report | The Wanderers played host to Edinburgh University after a disappointing start to the season away to Clydesdale the previous week. They had a point to prove to themselves and to the other teams in the national one league. It certainly looked like they were set on proving it fast, as within half a minute they were one goal to the good, after a series of short and snappy passing moves gave Bobby Ralph the opportunity to score from the edge of the attacking circle, which he did with gusto. This was short lived as soon after the visitors equalised through a short corner, then went on to take the lead minutes later after a defensive error from Wanderers. The home side did not let this knock them, however, and they restored their lead before the interval courtesy of Paul Daily and Bobby Ralph. Wanderers came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, with Allan Law scoring early on from a short corner. The away side started getting frustrated, which caused them to make rash challenges. Unfortunately, Wanderers reacted badly to these, and so a series of cards for both sides interrupted the flow of the game for a time. Wanderers were still on top, and increased their lead with two penalties, the first of which Bobby Ralph converted for his hat-trick, and the second Allan Law slotted past the keeper to give the home side a 6-2 win, a good result against a side which were around and about the level of Wanderers last season, and a positive sign of what’s to come. |
