Match Report |
First game of the season away to Kelburne was always going to be a tall order for this young Wanderers side marshalled by new coach Scott Warden. However the Reds came of the blocks better than their hosts and created the first chance of the game. Ross Glashan found himself with time and space inside the Kelburne D but failed to capitalised and put his effort wide of the right hand post. As the half progressed the opposition pressure bore fruit with a deflected goal in the 20th minute. The score remained 1-0 thanks primarily to some excellent keeping from Paul Johnstone and resolute defending across the team. It remained 1-0 until a short corner ricocheted of the stick of Bruce Rowan to make it 2 at halftime. Undeterred Wanderers remained resilient and despite Kelburnes excellent movement and continued pressure form Kelburne they remained frustrated for the vast majority of the second half. Unfortunately with 12 minutes remaining and the score at 3-0 the excellent Paul Johnstone suffered a recurrence of an injury picked up in pre season and Kelburne capitalized with an open play goal and a ludicrously soft penalty stoke. Conceding 5 to Kelburne may not sound satisfactory but it represents a significant performance for a young Wanderers side many of whom have no experience of that level. It will also be interesting to see how this result stacks up against that of other sides visiting the Champions. |
