Match Report

In the second game of their weekend, Wanderers travelled to Glasgow to play Hillhead in a cup re-scheduling due to pitch problems.

The Dundee side were looking to rectify their slip-up last week against the same opposition as they saw a three goal lead deteriorate in the late stages of the game to finish with only a point on their own turf.

They started off with high intensity, with a new look forward line pressing the opposition defence hard. This created a few scoring opportunities for the visitors, but the front three were not clinical enough to finish the chances. They Wanderers kept plugging away, but conceded a penalty which was converted. This only served to spur them on however, and they were rewarded during a short corner in which Marcus Schilling slapped the ball to the back post for Michael McKenzie to tap in with his reverse stick. An injury to the head for Richard Adleman ruled him out for the rest of the game, so Jack Fullerton slotted back into the defensive line to cover. This did not faze the visitors, who pushed on to score another after Bobby Ralph took the ball round the keeper to slot the ball into the corner. It looked set to stay 2-1 to the visitors at the interval, but a short corner on the stroke of half time for Hillhead was sent past Paul Johnstone to level the scores in the first period.

The second half started much like the first, with Wanderers pushing on with high energy. They dominated play, and easily snuffed out the rare attacking opportunities from the home side. The Hillhead players started getting frustrated, resulting in a yellow card for their go-to guy. The Wanderers then stepped it up another gear, and scored three quick-fire goals, all courtesy of Ross Glashan. The first goal was set up via a pin point pass from outside the 25-yard line straight to Ross’ stick, who had the easy job of finishing with his reverse stick. His second, minutes later, came after some good attacking play down the left side caused a loose ball to fall to him, which he finished with style. He finished his hat-trick much as he started, when a ball was fired to him in the attacking circle, this time however he turned on his front stick and rifled the ball past the Hillhead keeper. The visitors then went off the boil a bit, and allowed Hillhead to come back into the game as the match neared its final stages. Two controversial short corners led to two goals for the rejuvenated home team, but that was the end of the scoring for both teams, to finish 5-4 to Wanderers.

A good result to allow Wanderers to progress to the next round of the cup, although a slightly disappointing end to a largely positive performance.
