Match Report | The second match of a double header weekend was a difficult home match against Inverleith II in the last 32 of the District Cup. Wanderers II had recent history with their opponents in this competition, defeating them in the final a few years ago, albeit with much-changed personnel on both sides. Looking to improve on their performance against Harris Wanderers looked to take the game to their visitors and controlled possession for much of the opening exchanges and took the lead early in the game through an intricate passing move starting with Ben Gibson who found Scott Glashan and his cross was deflected high into the net by Greig Jamieson for his second goal in two games. Inverleith looked to have gotten back on equal terms almost right away when an attacker claimed to have gotten a touch on a ball driven into the circle, only for the umpire to disagree. Wanderers saw their opponents trying to get back into the game and did their upmost to keep them on the backfoot and their cause was aided by Blair Williams’ first goal of the season, slamming the ball home from close range. The second half was more of the same with Wanderers dictating the pace and flow of the game and Inverleith’s best chances coming when looking to attack on the break, a threat that Wanderers dealt with easily for the most part. Inverleith had chances from penalty corners to get back into the game but their two efforts were saved on the line by Bruce Rowan and deflected wide by Lewis Beer respectively. Wanderers put the game beyond the visitors, mid-way through the second half. Gibson broke down an Inverleith attack in his 25 before releasing Fergus Sandison who broke at pace and his reverse stick shot was only partly saved by the goalkeeper and found its way over line, even before Jamieson made sure of the goal. Inverleith got their consolation goal with only a few minutes to go, a ball fired across the circle was missed at the near post by defenders and forwards alike before finding its way to an unmarked player who made no mistake from close range at the back post. Wanderers II now go into the hat for the round of 16 draw. Check the website to find out who our opponents will be. LJB |
