Mens 2 Vs AAM Gordonians 3

Dundee Wanderers II entertained Regional League North new boys, AAM Gordonians III at DISC in their first home game of the season. Wanderers were looking to get back to winning ways after last week’s defeat in Aberdeen and looked to attack their visitors from the first whistle.

With a high tempo press putting the visitors defence under a great deal of pressure Wanderers found themselves with the majority of possession and it wasn’t long before that possession was converted to a goal. Ross Glashan dispossessed a defender in his own half before driving into the circle and forcing a low stick save from the opposition goalkeeper who was unfortunate to have Frank Mulgrew lurking at the back post for an easy finish. The first half was played out mainly in the Gordonians half with the Aberdeen side struggling to make any headway against the solid home defence and finding Wanderers’ forward movement difficult to deal with. In fact, Wanderers should have had a greater lead at the half but had to settle for the single goal.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first with Wanderers making all the play and Gordonians struggling to keep up. The second goal was inevitable and would come as the result of excellent stick skills from Benny Gibson on the baseline, beating several defenders before setting up Ross Glashan for an easy finish at the near post. With the comfort of a two goal lead Wanderers played with more confidence and Frank Mulgrew got his second of the game after Ross Glashan intercepted a Gordonians clearance feeding Mulgrew who rounded the goalkeeper to slot home.

More goals were coming and it was only several good saves from the visiting goalkeeper that prevented Wanderers adding to their tally. Ross Glashan picked up his second goal of the game after a ball fired across the circle was deflected into his path by Benny Gibson and the forward made no mistake in deflecting the ball into the net.

Gordonians were awarded a penalty corner and the opportunity to grab a consolation goal but the striker was thwarted by Shaun Chalmers on the line. Wanderers would complete their victory right on the final whistle, Gibson again the creator, weaving his way through the shell-shocked defence  and finding Arran White, somewhat out of his comfort zone of defence, to fire the ball home.

All in all a good victory for Wanderers, recovering from a disappointing result last week to earn a good win against a side that will cause other teams in Regional North some problems.
